What is Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM)?

Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) uses digital tools to track a patient's therapy adherence, therapy response, and symptoms between visits. CMS began paying for RTM in the 2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and expanded the code set for 2026. For musculoskeletal care, the main CPT codes are 98975 (initial setup and patient education), 98985 (device supply and data transmission, 2 to 15 days in a 30-day period), 98977 (device supply and data transmission, 16 to 30 days), 98979 (treatment management, first 10 minutes), 98980 (treatment management, first 20 minutes), and 98981 (each additional 20 minutes). The 2 to 15 day and 16 to 30 day device codes are not additive, and treatment management is billed under either 98979 or 98980 in a calendar month, not both.

What is Remote Therapeutic Monitoring?

Remote therapeutic monitoring was developed to better support musculoskeletal patients at home. RTM helps deliver improved engagement in your overall treatment plan and helps patients receive virtual support between their in-clinic visits.

The final 2022 Medicare Fee Schedule created a new family of CPT® codes for remotely monitoring musculoskeletal patients. Our team at Limber Health helped pioneer the RTM CPT codes.
